■Basic Information About Mt. Takao
Mt. Takao is a 599-meter (1,965 ft) mountain located in the western part of Tokyo.
It is a non-volcanic mountain formed by tectonic activity and is accessible for hiking year-round—spring, summer, fall, and winter.
With about 2.7 million visitors each year, Mt. Takao is said to be the most climbed mountain not only in Japan but in the entire world!
Since being featured in the Michelin Guide, the number of hikers has continued to rise.
There are several hiking routes available, including well-maintained paths that make the mountain beginner-friendly and easy to climb even for first-timers.
■Mt. Takao Entry Hours
If you plan to hike up Mt. Takao on foot, you can enter the trail 24 hours a day, anytime.
However, if you plan to take the cable car or chair lift, you’ll need to time your visit according to their operating hours.
Cable Car
- Starts operating at 8:00 AM
- The last ride depends on the season and whether it’s a weekday or weekend, generally between 5:15 PM and 6:30 PM.
Chair Lift (2-seater)
- Starts operating at 9:00 AM
- Weekdays (May–Nov): Until 4:30 PM
- Weekdays (Dec–Apr): Until 4:00 PM
- Weekends and holidays: Same as above, but may be extended depending on the crowd.
If you plan to visit Yakuo-in Temple, located halfway up the mountain, you may do so at any time. However, if you wish to receive a charm or temple seal, the reception is open only from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Shops and restaurants along the trail also follow set business hours.
- Shops near Kiyotaki Station (bottom of the cable car/lift): Open from 9:00 AM
- Shops near Takaosan Station (top of the cable car/lift): Open from 10:00 AM
■Recommended Time to Start Your Hike
Mt. Takao can get very crowded on weekends and public holidays, especially during peak seasons.

Mount Takao is crowded during the tourist season.
For a more pleasant experience, we recommend starting your hike from the base of the mountain around 7:00 AM.
At that time, the trails are still quiet, making it easier to walk at your own pace. By the time you descend, the shops and restaurants will be open, so you can enjoy a meal, take a rest, or buy souvenirs.
Keep in mind that most stores will be closed during your ascent, so be sure to bring enough food and water with you.
